What to Do When God Feels Distant
There are seasons in every believer's life when God feels silent. Prayer feels like talking into an empty room. Worship feels mechanical. The Bible reads flat. If you are in one of those seasons, you are not alone—and you are not broken.
Recognize the Wilderness as Normal
Even Jesus experienced a wilderness season. After His baptism, the Spirit led Him into the desert for forty days (Matthew 4:1). If the Son of God had a wilderness, it should not surprise us when we do too.
Spiritual dryness is not punishment. It is often preparation. God does some of His deepest work in us when we feel Him least.
Keep Showing Up
The most important thing you can do in a dry season is remain faithful. Do not wait until you "feel" like praying to pray. Feelings are unreliable guides. Show up because God is worthy of your presence, not because you are getting something out of it.
Job worshiped God even when everything was stripped away (Job 1:20). That kind of faithfulness is built in the dry seasons.
Ask Honest Questions
God can handle your questions. The Psalms are full of them. "Why, Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?" (Psalm 10:1). David did not pretend everything was fine. He brought his confusion directly to God.
Honest prayer is better than polished prayer. Tell God exactly where you are. He is not surprised by your doubts.
Look for God in Small Ways
In dry seasons, we often miss God because we are looking for dramatic signs. But God is frequently found in the ordinary—a kind word from a friend, a moment of unexpected peace, a verse that stands out. Train yourself to notice the small mercies. They are evidence that God has not left. You simply need new eyes to see Him.
Do Not Isolate
Dry seasons tempt us to withdraw. Fight that urge. Stay connected to community, even when you do not feel like it. Sometimes God speaks through the people around us when we cannot hear Him ourselves.
