What to Pray When You Don't Know What to Say
There are moments when you want to pray but the words simply will not come. You sit in silence, unsure of what to say or where to begin. The good news is that God has already given us words to pray. Here are practical ways to find your voice when prayer feels hard.
The Lord's Prayer Is Enough
Jesus gave His disciples a perfect template when they asked Him how to pray. Matthew 6:9-13 covers every essential element of prayer: honoring God, seeking His kingdom, asking for daily provision, confessing sin, seeking forgiveness, and asking for protection.
Break it down line by line and expand each phrase into your own words:
- "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name" — Worship God for who He is.
- "Your kingdom come, Your will be done" — Surrender your plans to His authority.
- "Give us today our daily bread" — Ask for what you need right now.
- "Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven" — Confess and release grudges.
- "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil" — Ask for protection and guidance.
When you do not know what to pray, start here. Jesus designed this prayer to cover everything that matters.
Pray Scripture Back to God
The Psalms are a rich prayer book because they give us words for every season. When you feel lost for words, borrow the words of Scripture and make them your own.
Try these examples:
- Psalm 23 — "The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing." Thank God for His provision and presence.
- Psalm 121 — "I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from?" Declare your trust in God as your helper.
Reading a Psalm aloud and adding a short response like, "Lord, I believe this is true for me too,"turns Scripture into a genuine prayer.
Use the BLESS Acronym
The BLESS acronym helps you pray for yourself or others in five key areas of life:
- Body — Pray for physical health, rest, healing, and strength.
- Labor — Pray for work, finances, purpose, and daily responsibilities.
- Emotional — Pray for peace, joy, freedom from anxiety, and emotional healing.
- Social — Pray for relationships, family, friendships, and community.
- Spiritual — Pray for faith, growth, obedience, and intimacy with God.
Walking through BLESS gives your prayer direction and ensures you are not neglecting any area of life before God.
Silence Is a Valid Prayer
Sometimes the most honest thing you can do is sit in silence before God. You do not always need words. Psalm 46:10 says, "Be still, and know that I am God."Being present with God—without an agenda, without a script—is a powerful form of prayer.
If words fail, offer God your attention. Show up. Be still. Let Him meet you in the quiet. That is prayer too.
A Prayer for When Words Fail
"Lord, I want to pray but I do not have the words right now. You know what is in my heart, and I trust You to meet me here. Speak to me in the silence. Hold me when I feel empty. Remind me that You are near even when I cannot find my voice. In Jesus' name, amen."
